This presentation is the result of collaboration with over a hundred housing industry members on how to best move the industry forward on a greener path. It discusses planning and policies, next generation buildings, the scale of neighbourhood systems, and the requirements from a housing industry perspective in moving forward towards a greener future. It represents the starting point for an industry-led collaborative initiative to build affordable sustainable housing through innovation. The roadmap process brought together homebuilders, their supply chain, academic and research organizations and other stakeholders, including utilities, who identified opportunities, barriers and actions required to reach the  vision of an “industry that will be capable of delivering affordable sustainable housing to homebuyers across Canada by 2020, to stimulate demand for over 40,000 sustainable houses across Canada.”  This presentation will focus on the findings of the roadmap and recommendations on the next steps from an industry perspective.

Key Topics:

  • Why net-zero energy homes matter within the Canadian Economy
  • Identification of the barriers to net-zero energy homes and sustainable housing across Canada
  • A plan for action on how we can make net-zero energy homes an option across Canada in the next ten years
  • How you can get involved

The Speaker

As President of Avalon Master Builder, Ryan Scott is a pioneer in eco-smart building. He is a second generation builder and is proud to sit as the Vice Chair of the Alberta New Home Warranty Program and as the Industry Champion developing a Technology Roadmap in Sustainable Housing. Every home built by Avalon Master Builder is an EnerGuide rated home. In fact, our Vision is to build 100% of Avalon homes as net-zero energy homes by 2015 at no additional cost to the consumer while creating homes people love to live in. Avalon is committed to building a demonstration house every year to test the most current practices in environmentally sustainable and energy efficient home building technologies. Having constructed over 550 Built Green homes, 3 net zero homes, and registering over 160 LEED homes Avalon and Ryan are well on their way to achieving these goals.
